It's been a bad month

Things have not gone to plan although I feel like I've been playing really good poker for the most part. A large number of bad beats for 2k+ pots have made a huge difference to my month and whereas if I'd run even across those hands I'd be about 8k up if not more I'm somewhere much lower and am quite disappointed with my profits.

However this said it'll even out over the long run and I'm expecting a return to a good level of profits during August. I'm off to Thailand for 2 weeks so won't be playing or posting, it'll be a good break for me and will be the first significant break I've had from poker for about a year. Can't wait, wish I was leaving having had a better month but I'm ahead despite running bad so I can't complain too much.

Oh my God!

I am running like a 3 legged donkey, this is simply the worst run of cards I have ever had in my life - I have been sucked out of another 2k pot where all the money was in with me WAYYYYYYY ahead again. This is starting to hurt. See below and if anyone has currently cursed me please remove it as I don't need this!

KK is the unluckiest hand in the world

Well today has been disasterously unfortunate. After posting earlier I've got involved in another huge pot, was certain what my opponent had and got all the money in on the turn and shock horror my KK gets cracked again by AQ spiking a Q on the river - nearly 5k of beats today!

My profits have taken a beating and I'm just gutted with how it's gone as I've played really well and should be at least 2k up rather than over 2k down. Ah well I'm playing well and getting my money in good and I can't do any more than that

Bad Beats

I have just suffered two horrendous beats back to back across two tables both times with KK. First one I call the raise and muppet behind makes it $185 to go, this felt like a raise which wanted no action so I was certain my KK was ahead and pushed all in. This was a $900 reraise which you'd fucking think would be enough to get someone to lay down a hand... not this tosser though, he calls with AK and unsurprisingly spikes an A for a $2100 pot.

This was bad enough but was then followed by tosser number two who takes a pot of me by calling $200 with one card to come chasing a runner runner flush and guess what that fucking well hit as well. Brilliant

So across these two hands I have been screwed out of nearly 3k - I won't lie it hurts and it hurts more because neither would have called if they could spell poker let alone play it!

Another Solid Evening

I've had a reasonable night at the tables despite there being a lack of action on Party this evening with only one 5-10 table going at times. However before I go on to that I've been looking over comments in my blog and there have been a couple of new ones from an unknown contributor. He doesn't seem to be very complimentry of me and I'm intrigued as to who it is -

If you happen to play on my tables on party please feel free to let me know who you are as I'm wondering who it is?

Anyway apart from one nasty suckout about 5 minutes ago things have gone ok this evening and my profits have risen nicely. Not many huge pots but a solid stream of middling ones have contributed to a reasonable evening. It's nice to have a couple of solid winning days in a row as it's been a while since that happened and I like to see my bankroll heading in the right direction.

In other news we now have the house to ourselves as Gregg moved out this morning - very exciting and Nat already has many plans for the spare room. I've literally just finished my session as I'm typing this and picked up a small pot with a nice bluff so a fine note to leave on!

It's 3m now and although I was planning to be up longer there is only 1 table going and it's just not worth my time - there were 4 going at this time yesterday and it does seem to fluctuate a lot on party which suggets to me that I need to expand to other sites especially those which have US players on. Sadly the best of those is Poker Stars and I'm not a huge fan of the software which puts me off somewhat. Still I shall have to get used to it I suppose as it would be beneficial to spread my play across some more sites.

i was going to do some hand analysis but am quite tired now I've stopped so shall write about them when I get up tomorrow

That's how you do it

It would appear that something in my brain has clicked into place and I've finally realised that it is possible to win in July. Have had a very good night/morning (it's now 4.15am) and I think I'm up just under 4k for the day. This ranks as one of my best ever days and hopefully puts pay to the slump I've been in where winning seems very difficult. I probably should have gone to bed earlier but have played on as I have been in the zone making some solid plays and feeling confident.

General rule with me is that if that happens I don't leave the table until I pretty much have to due to tiredness stopping my brain from functioning. It's been a while since I've felt so positive at the table and although I haven't had any massive pots - biggest about 1.3k I've chipped away and taken small stacks out at regular intervals.

I hope to continue this form into a late night session tomorrow and put up some really good figures for the weekend but we shall have to see if I manage that - probably depends largely on how well I sleep and also what Nat wants to do during the day.

One hand history, I failed miserably to save many just because I was focussed on my game but this one is a good read by me and I successfully got the lad to commit his stack which was nice.

Pocket A's are by far my most profitable hand an I think I play them extremely well, mixing my play up and being able to drop them on suitable occasions. In this pot I decided to just call the raise pre flop and make my real decisions after. This has the fine effect of making my hand very well disguised but has the flip side of letting more people in who may hit cards to hurt me. This is why AA is such a tricky hand to play well, once the flop comes with inoccuous low cards it can be very very difficult to drop and if you've let many people in a lot of the time when you ace a reraise post flop someone has hit a set.

Anyway back to this hand, I bet about half the pot on the flop to get an idea of where I was and was flat called by the one player with position on me. He was the one I was least worried of having an 8 and started to narrow the range of hands he might have at this point. I check the turn to him to try to induce a bet where I could put him to a decision for all his chips. He bet $120 which felt weak to me, at this stage I was virtually certain I was facing AQ (he actually had KQ) and raised enough to make his next decision one where realistically he had to go all in if he was staying with the hand. If he flat calls my reraise there are very few scare cards he can fold to on the river when I bet. He goes all in as I'd hoped and I win a nice pot.

AA is tricky and I'd recommend trying various ways of playing it to add to it's disguise from other players and increasing your opportunities to get away from it if you are beat.

Right my eyes are struggling to stay open now so bed is calling and I sign off in a very tired but cheerful mood. Amazing what a good win can do for you

Wiped Out

I am so tired at the moment, haven't got any energy and am finding getting up in the morning increasingly difficult. This isn't helped by me having a really dull, uneventful month at the tables as I've hovered around 1-2k up for the last week. It's been difficult finding time to play as we've been busy with people visiting and things and my enthusiasm for work, poker, being awake is limited.

Quite simply I need a holiday, luckily there are only 9 days until we go and with any luck Euan and Caroline will be visiting this weekend and that should perk me up and make me concentrate on my game as Euan is currently learning so I'll be motivated to win (show off).

I'm finding it a struggle because of the vast amount of time I still have left in my job, it's under three months now but not by much and although I care enough to make sure everything gets done it's not where I want to be every day. Still when I return from holiday there will be 2 months left and the end will start to look closer than it currently does. Ideally I'll win a bit before holiday as my bankroll is depleting because I insist upon paying myself every week regardless of whether I've been winning. Bankroll is currently at 9k in my account 5k of which is profit but ideally I want my bankroll at 20k and that is a long way off especially as 2k will be withdrawn each week.

Playing poker is not as carefree an occupation as I'd like it to be especailly during times where big wins are not forthcoming. My win rate this month has been awfully low and i think a lot of that is to do with how tired I am, very difficult to play your absolute best when feeling exhausted.

Done whinging now

Horrible Horrible Misplay

It's been an interesting day's play. I'm slightly up and have generally played quite well and typically got rivered for a large pot. However I have one hand which has really annoyed me because I'm honestly not sure if I could play it any worse at all. I was weak, indecisive and generally pathetic which are not words I commonly associate with my game. See below for full details of how and why I misplayed it so badly

Right, first impressions which you may have is that I have actually won the pot so how can I have misplayed it. This was actually my largest pot of the session whilst also being the worst I can play. I raise preflop with QQ and get 2 callers. Flop comes low and rainbow so I fire a conservative $80 at it. I am reraised by someone with position to $160 and decide to make the call and see what it feels like on the turn. So far I have no problem with my play as I'm giving myself every chance to get away and giving away nothing about my hand. The turn is the 6h which puts a flush draw and a potential straight on board, 8,10 has me crushed now as does a set. I check and see a bet of $210 which is undersized for the pot which is either showing supreme strength or weakness. Whatever my position at this point there are really only two options, raise all in or fold, the call is pathetic, allowing me to be bluffed on the river if an A,K or virtually any card in the deck comes. But needless to say the call is what I opt for despite the fact I am pretty sure I'm ahead, I should really go with my instincts as they are usually right and everything was screaming push at me! Luckily the river comes with a scare card and the player decided to abandon the bluff and let me have the pot. If he had bet the river strongly I have to fold, words cannot describe how poorly I played this hand and I'm quite disappointed with my lack of aggression as I turned into a calling station. There are lots of occasions where a check call is the right play but this just wasn;'t one of them. I would prefer it if I fold to the reraise on the flop at least that involves making a decision (albeit a wrong one). It's not that often that I play this badly but it really bothers me when I do!

return from the valleys

Having returned refreshed from a weekend in the valleys I feel alert and confident and was hoping for a big session as I'm doing really quite poorly in having real big days at the moment. All was going well about 1.5k up and then muppet boy hits a lucky 10 against me for a $1000 pot which has annoyed me sufficiently to come off and have a break as it just seems to sum up the lack of momentum I have at the moment when playing. Hand is below and to be honest it's only being posted because I'm still steaming a bit from it. If the guy had more chips I'd have called his raise and folded the turn when the 10 came so because of his medium sized stack I've lost more than I otherwise would have

grrr it's just so annoying as I knew I was beaten before the cards were turned. I like players who do this as they end up donating a lot of money to me it's just frustrating when they hit which on this particular hand he will around 20% of the time. Ah well this sort of thing happens and I'll be fine about it in 5 minutes, I've had far far worse happen for much larger amounts so it could be worse!

Anyway I'm going back to watching UFC 73 till midnight, the prospect of seeing grown men beaten up in a variety of ways will enable me to view the face of people who beat me and imagine I'm hitting them repeatedly

Tilt

Tilt is a major issue which affects virtually every player who has ever got involved in a game of poker. Everyone has at some point got emotionally attached in the game feeling that they must beat a certain player or retrieve their previous losses. There is nothing quite so detrimental to a bankroll than letting emotions get on top of you whilst at the table, tiredness has a similar impact as you begin calling bets which you wouldn’t generally as you are due to ‘get lucky’ and hit a flop.

For me I even register the fact that this is an abnormal play for me before doing it and still cannot prevent myself from clicking that raise or call button. It may seem inconsequential at the time as another $100 or 10 Blinds get sucked away but over the course of a week, month or year these amounts really add up and have a massive effect on your profitability. I had a fantastic month in June winning nearly $17,000 but I must have cost myself an equivalent amount through some ropey play. Being able to fold when you know you are behind and avoiding marginal situations where you are unsure of you position will leave you feeling better about your game and ensuring that you are as profitable as possible.

When I’m playing well I don’t make any mistakes (for my way of playing) I lay down hands like AQ suited in early position as I know that I don’t really want to call a big raise and rely on the flop, I can drop my set on the river when I know the other player has just hit his flush. However towards the ends of a session or if I’ve had a bad run suddenly I can’t do this and call regardless hoping to see a bluff or a lucky flop. For me it’s almost always tiredness which has this effect and this is the curse of still being in full time employment – It’s difficult to play you’re a game all the time especially when you have to play late at night without sufficient sleep.

At the moment I feel completely wiped out again as I’m concentrating on things all day and all night and finding little or no time to unwind and take a break. It must seem easy to you reading this to say ‘just take a week off’ the fact is I don’t want too, I enjoy playing and feel that I should win whatever my mental and physical state – this obviously is not the case and I really need to force myself to stop for a while as it will hugely benefit me in the long run. Luckily I’m off to Thailand in 2 weeks so that will be a beautiful enforced holiday which will allow me to recover and come back refreshed and ready to destroy all comers again.

I cannot wait until I am doing this full time as I’ll be able to play only when refreshed and alert as I won’t have the commitments of work and will be able to sleep when I need to and play when I genuinely feel like it. I may impose a schedule on myself but I’ll have to see how that works as part of the beauty of leaving work to do this is that I’m free to spend my time how I see fit. I intend to work in a fitness regime so that I exercise every day and that should help keep me alert and active and most importantly of all able to avoid the perils of tilt.

Idiot Player

It's been a frustratiung couple of evenings since I last posted. On Tuesday I lost about $1400 mainly due to AA getting robbed on the river with all the money in for an $1800 pot. I had raised to $40 and got two callers. Flop came 3,4,Q which didn't look too bad. I bet about $75 and was called. Turn came a 5 and I decided to check and see where I was at because I was out of position. A $210 bet came and I felt like I was ahead so I pushed all in for a further $500 and after a lot of thought I was called. Knew I was ahead at this point and hoping not to be sucked out on. River was a 2 giving me a straight and the idiot had committed his stack on a 66 to hit a higher straight.

I have no problem with how he played this up until the all-in call on the turn - he knows he is behind and has 10 outs so is a 4:1 dog which makes it a terrible call as he's getting 2.5:1 on his money. I'd had nothing happen at all up until this pot so it was really frustrating to get my money in good and have that happen. That said he can call that move all day long and I'll come out way ahead.

Went better last night as I cruised to a $700 win but not much of interest happened, I was busying myself reading 'Big Deal' about a year on the poker circuit and paying a limited amount of attention to the games. Sometimes this works really well for me as it stops me focussing on how much I'm up or down and just play the cards and the player. Still not a really advisable tactic as you're bound to miss lots of information.

I've been building my poker library lately as I find it interesting to read about the game and although I know odds for most things it still helps me to analyse my game by reading about how others play and their reasoning. I'm away in the valleys this weekend so I may play a bit tonight else it's no play till Sunday!

Overplay of big hands

I've had a reasonable evening, got my profits up to about 1.5k at it's peak with no real risks. This figure depleted rapidly towards the end of the night as I got top two pair with AQ losing to someone who'd limped AA and had about $400 so there was no way I could get away from the hand due to his stack size. Then I reraised pre-flop to $80 and got smooth called by an early position limper. To me this screams out danger and I lost another $260 in the pot - player I know and I'm pretty sure he had AA or QQ and both of those cards came by the turn so it was an easy fold. This was just annoying as it was around 10 minutes before quitting time and I saw my evening's work disintigrate before my eyes.

I'm also quite irritated by how I played my sets on the flop as I managed to reraise every time to avoid draws and got no extra action. There was one where I really should have called and let them bet the turn and then raise when some real money got in it. I played way too conservative and although it meant I chipped up ok I feel that i left a resonable amount behind. It annoys me when I do this as one of my strongest abilities is getting paid on my big hand and I'm playing AA and sets like a scared girl and it's just unimpressive.

Other than that I played a $55 tourny with a 6k 1st place and came 52nd out of 544 which was ok as I was never in contention really so it was nice to cash. I like to play the odd tournament with my Party Points as it means I'm basically freerolling and I want to become a lot better at them as I intend to go to the World Series and play a few events next year so sharpenning up my tourny play is a pretty smart idea.

Anyway I'm tired now and slightly disappointed despite a reasonable evening, it could have been so much more

Not a typical hand by any means but I'm posting it to illustrate how checking instead of betting on the flop can be to your advantage in getting some reasonable value from hands when you hit. I hit top pair, top kicker on the flop but as I'm out of position to an aggressive player i decided to mix my play up and check. This enables me to keep the pot relatively small and not get bluffed off my hand by a raise when I think I'm ahead but not certain. Turn comes with a Q and I bet trying to look weak and am rewarded with a raise to $150. I flat call as I intend to check call the river and think that I am still way ahead and he'll fold to a raise. River comes a blank and sadly we both check.

Looking at this hand from both points of view I don't think either of us played it badly and he would have got very well rewarded if an A came on the river but overall I am happy with my play as it keeps people guessing as to what I have when I either check or bet in the future and I manage to keep the pot to a size I'm comfortable with when I have only top pair.

Changing the way you play after a pre flop raise is essential as it doesn't help to become too predictable and plays like this may help you to see more free cards when you do miss the flop and check because you are weak.

Ok here is a huge pot which I feel has been played horribly by the guy with AA. First of all his raise before I act was done to isolate the one player already in with a 'call me' raise. When I call he has to be wary of the hands which I'd call a raise and reraise with preflop which puts it down to a very limited range of which KK is obviously one. The flop comes K high and I know I'm in for a big pay off as I strongly suspect the player has AA or AK and I would have been willing to fold my overpair based on my read even to a low board. His bet on the flop is a good one as it lets him know where he is, my raise basically comitts him to his whole stack if he wants to play the pot and I genuinely believe a good player folds here as it is far too likely he is behind to me given how the hand has been played. However yet another player cannot fold AA and he pushes all in which I very happily call. Massive pot for me and one where I know if it was reversed I would have lost a lot less after the flop. It may seem easy to play but I was willing to lay KK down post flop and I do believe that his play was asking for what it got!

I still don't know if I played this one right - I am comfortable with my play but possibly could have risked a bit more on it by calling. Anyway multiway limped pot where I hit my set, I know the raiser hasn't got QQ or AA as in his position he would definitely have raised pre flop with so many limpers - so I know my hand is currently good. With the two players in for $50 I have a big decision - if I call the two behind me almost certainly call with any draw so I'd be dodging any spade and possibly a 10. Also if the spade comes I don't know how much it would take to push me off the pot as I will have odds to call a lot of bets. Therefore I take the route of raising and decide that an all in looks far weaker (maybe a flush draw) than a smaller raise - I genuinely expected the original raiser to call as it was a hugely outsized bet and if he's got what I think (2 pair) it takes a lot of discipline to lay it down. I also see a lot of people over commit with draws and so wouldn't be surprised to see a call from the flush draw. He decides to fold (very sensible) and I take about $400 from the pot. Thing is if I call, I really have to check to him on the next card to extract maximum value and if he checks behind I my be giving two free cards.

Any comments on this hand are welcomed as I genuinely don't know If I played this the best way, especially as both of us had BIG stacks.

This one is a classic example of a play I really only make against a short stack. I have 99 and the short stack has raised pre flop - I'm pretty sure I have him beat but there is someone to act behind me, to isolate I minimum raise (knowing that if called behind I'm probably beat) only the short stack calls and flop comes 10 high. I push knowing that he's basically pot committed and get the call and take $160 or so in the hand as he fails to hit. If the raiser had a bigger stack I would never play like this as to many overcards can come and scare me - just an example of how plays should and will alter due to stack size!

This was virtually my last hand before the pub and pretty much played itself. I have QQ preflop and decide to flat call the $40 raise along with 4 others. Flop comes AQ10 with 2 hearts and I know that I am not getting away from this hand no matter what happens. Original raiser puts in a pathetic $18 which is raised to $70. I repop this to $390 as no way am I leeting any draws in cheap and if someone has AA or KJ then good luck to them - I'm unsurprised to see the preflop raiser move all in as I suspected he may do that from his flop bet and I have no choice but to call and pray I'm ahead. Turn and river fill all available draws meaning I'm dead to 2 hearts or a K but luckily he has AQ for top two pair and I win a monster.

I like the way I play this as if I'm behind I suck it up and my betting removes ( or should remove) all draws. I hate with a passion the way the guy with AQ has played this on the flop - he has bet weakly and then seen a raise and amonster reraise and has not though that folding would be a good idea. What could I have which he is beating? Stupid play - he should have bet much much stronger on the flop and then he'd have had a much greater idea of where he was. It can be hard to let go of top two pair on the flop but sometimes it should be a formality and this was one of those times - he's played his cards regardless of all the danger and deserves to have lost a sizeable pot.

Right I'm off as I have work tomorrow and I'm a few pints to the good

New Month, New Target

Right, I've decided that I will set myself a target each month and state it in my blog so that I and anyone who reads this can assess how I'm doing based upon the parameters I set for myself. This month I'm away most weekends, go to Thailand later on in the month and work will be getting increasingly busy. Therefore I am setting a lower target than last month as I don't want to burn myself out or strive too hard to hit something which is a touch unrealistic. Therefore I am aiming for 12k this month which would be a nice steady amount to hit and hopefully I will avoid the bad runs etc which affected me so much in June.

the month has already started very well as I am 2k up already having played a bit today, it's nice to get in profit early as seeing positive figures in pokertracker are very beneficial for confidence and expectations. Am going out to the pub so will either post hand analysis when I return drunk or something a touch more thought out when sober tomorrow evening.

Steve drinks a whisky drink, he drinks a vodka drink, he drinks a lager drink, he drinks a cider drink, he falls over....

Steve

July Target - 12k
July Profit - 2k

Oh, and that's a bad miss....

Well, i screwed up my monthly profits - got to within 1k of hitting 20k and then dropped down to 18k for the month. For some reason despite being knackered I decided to have another crack and donked off 1k chasign a flush with no reason for my calls. I can be an absolute muppet at times!

however despite this I was still only down $500 for the day and to be honest overplayed horribly as Nat was working all day - this is something I'll have to be wary of as it is very easy to fall into the trap of playing too much as you strive to win that bit more - it's a counterproductive thing for me to do and is yet another leak in my game which I know I need to fix. After screwing up my last hand of the night i struggled to sleep as i don't shrug off my own idiocy too well!

Still I can't complain as I've had my best ever month, one which would make me a very rich man if I could continue in the same vain for the next few years and I know there is tons of room for improvement. So overall it's all good. I've come through a really rocky period and regained my confidence and hitting the target I set really isn't the be all and end all it just hurts a little that i missed it.

I've got some hand analysis to do but I'll post them all in a seperate thread as this is the monthly round up. I've managed to be very successful whilst having a full time job and this all augers well for when I do this full time. When I actually think about the amounts I'm playing for and how well I'm doing (I only just made this months total in all of last year) I am genuinely exstatic about how it's going, it's just that I appear to have become ridiculously ambitious and want to have a flawless game where I can live a nice easy life doing what I love. Sadly not that easy but I'm slowly getting there - discipline is the key and I must have cost myself at least 10-15k this month alone through tired or stupid play, cut that out and all is rosy!

happy and relaxed

Steve
